WHO and INTERPOL Agree to Closer Cooperation on Health Threats

The World Health Organization and INTERPOL announced a cooperation agreement on 16 October 2026, bringing public health and law enforcement expertise into a shared framework.

What the agreement covers

According to the joint announcement, the organizations will work together on unusual biological events and incidents involving suspected misuse of chemical or radioactive materials. Cooperation will also support preparations for major international events and mass gatherings.

Other priorities include trafficking for organ removal, falsified medicines and medical devices, counterfeit protective equipment, unsafe food and drink, and illegally produced alcohol.

What the announcement means

The agreement establishes a basis for coordinated prevention, detection and response. It is an institutional cooperation announcement; the release does not describe a newly confirmed emergency affecting the public.

For readers following the development, the next useful questions concern implementation: how countries will receive support, which joint activities begin first, and how results will be assessed. Those questions remain separate from the commitments announced today.
