Why Antibiotics Are Not the Answer to Every Cold

Antibiotics can be essential treatment, but they are not useful for every infection. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that antibiotics treat certain bacterial infections and do not treat viruses.

Different illnesses need different care

Colds, flu and most sore throats are caused by viruses. Taking an antibiotic for a viral illness will not provide the intended benefit and can still cause side effects. Unnecessary use also contributes to antimicrobial resistance.

Even some bacterial infections may not require an antibiotic. A healthcare professional can assess whether the medicine is appropriate.

Use a prescription correctly

When an antibiotic is prescribed, take it exactly as directed. Do not share it, take somebody else’s medicine, or save leftovers to treat a future illness.

At a consultation, useful questions include: what is the likely cause of the illness, what can help with symptoms, and when should the person seek further care? This article cannot determine the cause of an individual illness or select a treatment.
